Campaigners call for Trump better behaviour
Campaigners supporting the rights of home owners on Donald Trump's Menie estate are calling on the tycoon to give a commitment to better behaviour during his visit to Scotland starting tomorrow. Mr Trump has been in dispute with residents at Menie for more than four years because he wishes to acquire some of his neighbours' homes in order to include the additional land in his planned golf resort.
Mr Trump has previously asked Aberdeenshire Council to use compulsory purchase powers to obtain for him the homes of four families living on the estate.
Since dropping the request to the Council for compulsory purchase orders, other tactics have been used to make life difficult for the residents, including a threat of legal action against David Milne.
Martin Glegg of campaign group Tripping Up Trump said: "Mr Trump has behaved disgracefully towards his neighbours over an extended period of years - using insulting language, bullying and seeking to intimidate. But Mr Trump's campaign to force his neighbours out has failed. Tripping Up Trump is calling on Mr Trump to recognise that, change his attitude and give an undertaking that the harassment of his neighbours will stop."
Aberdeenshire councillor Martin Ford has been at the forefront of the campaign supporting the residents' right to continue to live peacefully in their own homes. He said: "Mr Trump's neighbours have every right to decide they are not going to give up their homes just because Mr Trump wants them. Mr Trump has clearly found that difficult to accept, but his reputation and that of his proposed resort are going to continue to suffer until Mr Trump changes his behaviour. Better behaviour from Mr Trump would not just be a welcome change for the Menie residents, it would help Mr Trump too.
"Frankly, until now Mr Trump has been the neighbour from hell. He should use this visit to promise to treat his neighbours in a normal, decent manner from now on."
Mr Trump's visit follows closely on from the Scottish premiere in Aberdeen last Friday of a 90-minute documentary charting Mr Trump's campaign against his neighbours and his destruction of a large part of the Foveran Links Site of Special Scientific Interest.
