Cut Trident, not public services say Greens

Sue Edwards, the Scottish Greens' Parliamentary Candidate for Gordon, has expressed her support for the recent ‘Cut Trident Not Jobs’ demonstration in Edinburgh, highlighting that the billions of pounds that would be wasted on replacing Trident should be spent on vital public services instead.

 Sue Edwards said:

"I fully support the campaign to cut the replacement of Trident nuclear weapons. Vital services are already being starved of cash to prepare for a so-called defence system which is useless in modern warfare.  I am sure that the majority of Scots want that money to be spent on affordable housing, health, education and tackling climate change, not weapons of mass destruction that we don’t need.

“On 14 March 2007 a clear majority of Scottish MPs voted against the Government's plan to renew and replace the Trident nuclear weapon system. 33 voted against, only 22 in favour, while 4 abstained or did not vote.”

"There is still time to cancel plans for Trident replacement.  The largest contracts will be awarded in this coming term of Parliament.  People in this constituency will need to know if their candidates intend to squander public money on replacing Trident or if they would vote for a safer world without nuclear weapons and with more money for public services.

“The bottom line is that we can’t afford to do everything we are doing now.  Something has to go.”
