Green campaign visits green initiative

The Scottish Green Party's election campaign in Gordon on Monday (26 April) involved a visit to the community composting operation run by Pitmedden, Udny and Tarves Community Cooperative (PUT). Sue Edwards, the Green Party's candidate for Gordon, was accompanied during the visit by Scottish Green Party Co-convenor Patrick Harvie MSP and by Aberdeenshire councillors Martin Ford and Debra Storr.

The Green Party representatives were shown round by PUT volunteers Vicky Allan, Dave Horsley and Chris York.
PUT takes over 200 tons of garden waste from the three villages involved in the scheme each year and composts it.  The end product is then available for use in gardens and community flower tubs.   PUT has a contract from Aberdeenshire Council who, instead of paying landfill tax, pay PUT to compost garden waste.

Green candidate Sue Edwards said "This type of community initiative which diverts waste from landfill, involves the community and raises funds for use in the community is a perfect example of local, green action. Greens support this type of partnership between the council, community volunteers and the farm where the composting takes place. It is clear that the success of PUT is strongly related to the fact that the operation is very local and is a result of the tremendous commitment of the volunteers involved."

The PUT volunteers took the opportunity to lobby Green MSP Patrick Harvie on the strict regulations governing the use of the end product which is still, technically, waste and not allowed to be sold.
